The City of London Livery Company for the Communications and Content Industries
“Verbum Domini manet in aeternum” – The Word of the Lord endures forever (Company motto)
This window was taken from the Stationers’ Company’s School in Hornsey N8 when it closed in 1983. Thankfully the company preserved a part of the heritage and for that we are grateful.
The History of the Stationers’ Company
The Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers traces its roots back to 1403, when book traders who operated from stationary stalls around St. Paul’s Cathedral formed a guild. Officially incorporated by royal charter in 1557 by Queen Mary I, the Stationers’ Company was granted the authority to regulate and license all publishing in England.
Through the centuries, the Company played a central role in preserving the integrity of the written word, particularly in its role as the guardian of copyright. Today, while no longer regulating publishing, the Company remains a leading Livery Company of the City of London, supporting communication, education, and literacy through its charitable and professional work.
“The Word of the Lord liveth forever” – an enduring phrase found on the Company’s heraldic charge.
My Personal Journey
🏫 School Years
My journey began as a pupil at the Stationers’ Company’s School. It was here that one first experienced the values and traditions that would continue to shape my path. The red brickwork, oak paneling and stain glassed windows a throwback to the original private school exclusively for the sons of the livery. A photo of the school is shown below;
Unfortunately the school was closed but thankfully the proceeds of it sale helped the Stationer’s Company create a charity which training, education and welfare.
🤝 Staying Connected
After the school’s closure, one remained involved through the Old Stationers’ Association, nurturing lifelong friendships and supporting alumni events. We regularly attend the annual lunches that are held as well as the President’s day and one is also involved on the Old Stationers’ Association committee.
💼 Becoming a member
Years later, one became a member of the Stationers’ Company—a proud moment that acknowledged my professional and personal dedication to the Company’s mission. As a author, the company has been instrumental in helping me to launch the book and provide publicity.
🎓 Supporting Education
My involvement extended to supporting the fundraising efforts for the new Stationers’ School, helping create opportunities for future generations. Also, there are future engagements such as school visits to discuss my book that was written as a salutary lesson regarding exploitation and manipulation of children.
